With a population of about 3000, Caromb is a perfect size, big enough to have all the basic supplies that you want, but small enough to still definitely be a village.

Best of all, while there are some houses owned by foreigners like us, we’re still very much the minority and we hope it stays that way. If you stay in our house you’re staying in a French village that’s governed by the habits and preferences of the locals not the demands of foreign tourists. Having said that, English language papers are available early in the day from the newsagent, Hall de la Presse!

History

The name Caromb comes from "Quairoun" which is old Provencal for "carved stone" - there are large quarries nearby.

Caromb existed as a village as early as 980 with the first written references to Castrum Carumbo appearing in 1021. In 1286 Etienne de Vesc bought the Seigneury (landholding) and turned Caromb into the most important village in the Comtat.

In the 14th century the village ramparts were built, but more importantly Pope John XXII introduced truffles to the area.

Caromb enjoyed expansion and prosperity until 1562 when it was pillaged during the French Wars of Religion. On 14 September 1791, as part of the French Revolution reforms that created the Departments we know today, Caromb was declared a French town.

Expansion during the farming boom of the 19th century, enabled Caromb to maintain its place as a dynamic living village, a position it continues to hold today.

Shopping

There’s Christophe Brangier's boulangerie patisserie 50m from the house but you’ll have to walk 100m to get to the heart of the village where, as well as the Hall de la Presse, you’ll find:
